Rabeprazole (Aciphex) is an acid-reducing drug of the proton pump inhibitor group. The active substance blocks the formation of hydrochloric acid at the terminal stage and also reduces the stimulation of secretion, regardless of the type of stimulant.

Bioavailability of the active substance, as well as absorption properties of the drug itself, do not depend on the time of its intake.

  3. Metabolism: hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia.

  4. Nervous system: sleep disturbance, headache, dizziness, nervousness, depression, confusion.

  5. Organs of vision – visual impairment.

  6. Vascular system: peripheral edema.

  11. If you have an allergic reaction or side effects, tell your doctor, who will cancel the drug or reduce the dosage.

Rabeprazole vs Omeprazole

Both drugs belong to the group of proton pump inhibitors. They are used in gastroenterology as part of the complex therapy of acid-dependent pathologies of the digestive tract. However, there are some differences presented in the table.

Name

Rabeprazole

Omeprazole

Indications

Benign peptic ulcer, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.  In complex therapy with antibacterial drugs for detection of Helicobacter pylori.

Peptic ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum (in the acute phase), treatment with Helicobacter pylori (as part of combination therapy).

Gastropathy caused by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Side Effects

Abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, flatulence, dry mucous membranes, headache and dizziness, skin rash, peripheral edema.

Diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, flatulence; in rare cases – increased activity of liver enzymes, taste disorders, dry mouth, stomatitis, in patients with previous severe liver disease – hepatitis.

Course of treatment

7 days

In duodenal ulcer – 2-4 weeks, if necessary – 4-5 weeks; in peptic ulcer disease, in reflux esophagitis, in erosive-ulcer gastrointestinal lesions, caused by taking NSAIDs – for 4-8 weeks

Half-life

Plasma half-life is about one hour (0.7 to 1.5 hours)

The elimination half-life is less than 1 hour, and Omeprazole is almost completely eliminated from plasma within 3 to 4 hours.

The clinical data obtained suggest that Rabeprazole is more effective for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease compared to Omeprazole.

Rabeprazole: Dosage

It is recommended to take Rabeprazole in the morning, on an empty stomach, before a meal. If there is no effect within 3 days, you should inform your doctor.

Treatment of peptic ulcer in acute stage – 20 mg once a day for 4 weeks

Peptic ulcer in the chronic phase – 10 or 20 mg once a day for 6 weeks, if healing is poor, the doctor may extend another 6 weeks.

Reception time and food have no effect on Rabeprazole activity, but it is considered that patients comply better with the prescribed treatment regimen if Rabeprazole is taken in the morning, half an hour before meals (when taken once a day).

Interactions of Rabeprazole

Rabeprazole (Aciphex) reduces the activity of gastric acid secretion. Thus, Rabeprazole interacts with those drugs whose absorption is dependent on gastric pH.

If Rabeprazole sodium and Ketoconazole or Itraconazole are taken simultaneously, the plasma concentrations of the latter may decrease. Therefore, patients using these drugs together with Rabeprazole should consult a physician to determine whether a dose adjustment is necessary.

Concentrations of Rabeprazole may decrease when concomitantly used with antacids.

Low-fat food intake does not affect the absorption of Rabeprazole. Taking the drug with fatty food may delay absorption for 4 hours or more, but the maximum concentration and absorption level remain unchanged.

Rabeprazole and its effects on weight gain

The drug may cause side effects in the form of decreased appetite, which may result in a decrease in body weight. It is important to stick to a gentle diet and doctor's recommendations during treatment.

What is Rabeprazole used for?

The drug is prescribed for the following diseases:

  1. For short-term treatment (4-8 weeks) of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

  2. Rabeprazole is indicated for maintenance of healing and reduction of recurrence and heartburn symptoms in patients with erosive-ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease.

  3. For short-term treatment (up to four weeks) and relief of symptoms of duodenal ulcer disease.

  4. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

  5. Rabeprazole is prescribed in combination with antibiotics such as Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin to effectively treat patients with H. pylori infection, which is the main cause of peptic ulcer disease.

  6. Treat hypersecretory disorders, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

  7. Caution is prescribed for patients with liver disease. Before taking the drug, tell your doctor about any comorbidities and taking other medications.

Rabeprazole vs. Pantoprazole

The drugs belong to the same pharmaceutical group, but Rabeprazole is safer and causes fewer side effects.

Name

Rabeprazole

Pantoprazole

Composition

Rabeprazole sodium

Pantoprazole sodium sesquihydrate

Side Effects

Various types of headache, diarrhea, aching, or spastic abdominal pain, apathy, flatulence, skin rash and dry mucous membranes.

Dizziness or headache;

Abdominal pain or diarrhea;

Nausea and vomiting;

Gassiness;

Pain in a joint;

Signs of a cold

Interactions

Symptoms of dyspepsia associated with high gastric acidity, symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn, sour belching).

Treatment of symptoms of mild reflux esophagitis (heartburn, nausea, sour belching); Zollinger-Ellison syndrome; eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with antibacterial agents.

The course of treatment

7 days

For exacerbation of duodenal ulcer it is 2 weeks, and for gastric ulcer it is 4-8 weeks.

You can buy Rabeprazole otc in our online pharmacy. This is very convenient because the price of Rabeprazole is listed along with a prescription from your doctor.

Rabeprazole and alcohol

When abusing alcohol at the same time as taking Rabeprazole, the side effects may increase. The drug may have the opposite effect: development of new ulcers and exacerbation of existing diseases instead of treatment. Regular alcohol abuse during peptic ulcer disease and other diseases for which the drug is prescribed, even in the absence of incompatibility, leads to exacerbations and development of acute conditions.

How long does it take for Rabeprazole to work?

Anti-secretory action, after oral administration of 20 mg of Rabeprazole (Aciphex), occurs within 1 hour and reaches a maximum after 2-4 hours.
