Claritin loratadine Generic 10 mg 20 Tabs

Claritin is a drug used to treat allergic diseases. It has a long-lasting blocking effect on histamine, which is released in the body during allergic reactions. The long action of the drug means that it is enough to take it once a day. In the usual dosage, Claritin doesn’t impair performance and reduce concentration and usually doesn’t cause drowsiness.

Claritin reditabs are used by adults and adolescents from 12 years of age for prophylactic and symptomatic treatment of hay fever, chronic allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and urticaria. 

Indications

The drug is prescribed for a variety of symptoms associated with allergies, including:

• seasonal (pollinosis) and year-round rhinitis;
• allergic form of conjunctivitis;
• elimination of common symptoms associated with these diseases: sneezing, nasal mucosa itching, rhinorrhea, burning sensation and itching of the eyes, lacrimation;
• chronic idiopathic urticaria.

The drug does not affect the CNS or cause drowsiness, unlike other antihistamines.

How long does Claritin work?

The drug has a fast and prolonged antiallergic effect. The beginning of the action within 30 minutes after taking Claritin allergy medicine orally. The antihistamine effect reaches its maximum stage from 8-12 hours after the start of the action and lasts for more than 24 hours.

It's not recommended to use more than 7-10 days, as longer administration reduces the effectiveness and the risk of side effects increases.

Claritin: Allergy

Generic Claritin (just one tablet) can eliminate the symptoms of allergies all day and night. Claritin helps with conditions such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and urticaria. Claritin helps relieve symptoms such as allergic sneezing, nasal discharge and lacrimation, and itchy skin. Allergies are a direct indication for the prescription of Claritin, but your GP may recommend the drug as an adjunct to reduce the side effects of other drugs.

What is the difference between Claritin and Claritin D?

The action of Claritin allergy medicine is aimed at blocking histamine, a chemical in the body that causes allergy symptoms such as itchy skin, sneezing, runny nose, and lacrimation. The difference is that Claritin D contains an additional anti-inflammatory agent (Pseudoephedrine sulfate) for nasal congestion and sinus pressure.

Claritin and alcohol

Most medications shouldn't be taken along with alcohol. Most often, the combination of antihistamines and alcoholic beverages is considered impossible because it causes a complex of adverse symptoms.

However, Claritin is notable for its gentle action. It doesn't affect the central nervous system. Medication also doesn't reduce reaction time and not cause drowsiness.

That is why Claritin tablet and alcohol are considered relatively compatible substances. However, you should not forget that each person's body reacts individually. 

Simultaneous use of medical drugs and alcoholic beverages leads to an increased load on the liver. Doctors recommend refraining from alcohol while taking Claritin.

Claritin and alcohol may cause the following symptoms:

• dizziness;
• nausea, in some cases vomiting;
• lethargy and apathy;
• drowsiness;
• swelling of the extremities;
• spastic headaches.

Life-threatening symptoms after simultaneous use of Claritin and alcoholic beverages do not occur. However, well-being may suddenly worsen.

To reduce the likelihood of negative symptoms after a combination of alcohol and medication, you need to monitor the time interval between the last intake of Claritin tablets and the dose of alcohol.

It is desirable that after the use of Claritin and before drinking alcohol a day should pass. Also, the next intake of the pill can be only 20 hours after the last alcohol consumption.

What should not be taken with Claritin?

You should not take Claritin (Loratadine) with Erythromycin, Cimetidine, and Ketoconazole, as these drugs increase the concentration of Claritin in blood. Simultaneous use of these drugs may lead to overdose.

Claritin should not be used if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or within 2 weeks of stopping MAOI. Taking these medicines together may lead to an increased risk of side effects.

Using cholinolytics with antihistamines may increase side effects, such as dryness of the oral mucosa and larynx.

Does Claritin increase blood pressure?

Claritin is an allergy medication that contains an anti-inflammatory substance. The drug can raise or lower blood pressure by affecting blood vessels and heart rate. Be sure to consult your doctor if you have any abnormalities in your cardiovascular system.

How much Claritin can I take?

Claritin tablets are taken regardless of meals. Adults and children from 12 years of age take 1 tablet (10 mg Claritin) once a day. 

In children aged 2-12 years, the dose depends on body weight. If body weight >30 kg: 10 mg (1 tablet) 1 time per day. Children with body weight <30 kg are prescribed in the form of syrup.

Claritin during breastfeeding

Claritin 10 mg and its active metabolite are excreted with breast milk, so when prescribing the drug during lactation, the mother should stop breastfeeding for a while. 

Can I take Benadryl and Claritin?

It is not recommended to take Claritin and Benadryl together because they have similar side effects. Taking them together may increase the risk of side effects. Claritin has a relatively long half-life, so it may not be safe to take Benadryl 12 hours after Claritin. Consult your doctor before taking multiple antihistamines.

Contraindications

Major contraindications:

• Individual sensitivity to Claritin (Loratadine) and other elements included in the drug
• Glucose-galactose malabsorption
• Galactosemia
• Lactose intolerance

Caution is exercised when prescribing in patients with severe renal insufficiency (in this case, the drug dose should be adjusted) and in elderly persons.

Side effects 

The drug is often tolerated without complications.

Sometimes, in people with individual intolerance, such symptoms may occur:

• nausea; 
• increased fatigue;
• dry mouth;
• drowsiness and headaches.

In addition, cardiac arrhythmias, epidermal rash, alopecia, fainting, liver dysfunction, and anaphylaxis may occur.
