Please consult your physician before taking any medication. Brand name: Spiriva HandiHaler Generic name: Tiotropium Why is Spiriva HandiHaler prescribed? Spiriva is used for the long-term, once-a-day treatment of bronchial spasms (wheezing) associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It comes as a capsule containing dry powder, which is inhaled through the mouth using the HandiHaler device. When inhaled, Spiriva opens up narrow air passages, allowing more oxygen to reach the lungs. SPIRIVA HandiHaler is not a rescue medicine and should not be used for treating sudden breathing problems. Do not swallow SPIRIVA capsules. Only use SPIRIVA capsules with the HandiHaler device. The contents of the capsule should only be inhaled by mouth using the HandiHaler device. Stop taking SPIRIVA and get medical help right away if your breathing suddenly worsens, your throat or tongue swells, you get hives, or have vision changes or eye pain. Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, problems passing urine or an enlarged prostate, as these may worsen with SPIRIVA. Also discuss with your doctor all the medicines you take, including eye drops. Spiriva HandiHaler may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
